Job Summary:

The job of Engineering Intern was established to help the current organization ensure that projects and related efforts accomplish objectives by planning and evaluating activities and to aid interns learn about pharmaceutical engineering functions. The intern will also learn about cGMPs and OSHA safety requirements. The Engineering Intern will manage capital projects, drive process and program improvement, and spearhead portions of the company's ESG program.

On-Site Expectations:

  • 100% on-site position.

Responsibilities:

  • Trace and red-line drawings. The project engineer intern will be asked to take existing drawings and trace them in the field for accuracy. Changes will be red-lined on the hard copy drawings. Drawings such as utility drawings, floor plans, amongst other items will be in scope. This activity will train the engineer how to trace such drawings but also teach them about utilities and other such topics.
  • Commissioning specific utilities or equipment: Commissioning ensures facilities, utilities, equipment, and systems used throughout pharmaceutical manufacturing and lab operations fit their intended purpose.
  • The Engineering Intern will aid the company's ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) Environmental Initiatives. This includes but is not limited to working with each site and the company's EHS department to harmonize how relevant data is collected (i.e. refrigerant use, water consumption, electricity), building site and corporate goals as it related to the environmental portion of ESG, presenting KPIs on all such relevant ESG efforts.
  • Assist Project Engineers/Sr. Project Engineers in managing capital projects. Each project assistance effort will be unique but the intern can learn much about the process shown below:
  • The staffed Project Engineers manage projects (capital, construction, utility, green initiatives, etc). They also oversee the project planning process, including developing a project implementation plan, collecting project requirements, defining the project scope, defining project activities, developing project activity sequencing, establishing activity resource needs, establishing activity durations, developing project schedules, developing cost estimates; developing communications and risk management plans. Focus shall be on:
    • Manage construction project from beginning to end:
    • Identify requirements, develops, and prepares written project scope of work and other concept phase documents.
    • Develop information necessary for RFP process. Manage Formal bid process and selection of contractors.
    • Select and work with consultants/A&E firms to create project drawings and specifications as applicable.
    • Manage design review process and secure all applicable approvals.
    • Provide value engineering expertise based on constructability and design expertise and calibrate design solutions.
    • Review plans, specifications, and submittals for new and remodeled building projects for code compliance and building standards.
  • Other duties as assigned including but not limited to:
    • Work with other engineering groups such as GMP maintenance, non-GMP facilities, and security to:
    • Assist with processing the backlog of SOPs that our group currently has awaiting biennial review/revision
    • Assist implementing some 5S initiatives within our Lab, warehouse, manufacturing & office areas
    • Office Planning / Space Planning: development and updating seating charts
    • Assist in escorting any onsite vendors we have scheduled.
    • Task to vary by intern but working with these traditional engineering functions will allow the intern to gain knowledge and experience regarding pharmaceutical engineering organizations and tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Educational requirements include at least the pursuit of a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline related to the occupation. Applicable engineering disciplines for this position include electrical, mechanical, or chemical. Other engineering degrees may be considered.
  • Experience in the pharma industry or process engineering is a plus but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Project Management Skills (i.e. budget tracking, schedule development and adherence, project reporting, etc.).
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, Outlook.
  • Scheduling Software: Microsoft Project preferred.
  • Knowledge of space utilization.
  • Others: Developing and tracking project budgets, Self-Development.

Travel Expectations:

  • None anticipated.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Must possess:

  • Mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, printer, and fax machine.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle as the site has buildings on various sides of the street and projects may be implemented in any one of four buildings.
  • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone.
  • The job involves field inspection work requiring frequent walking to construction sites to monitor performance and to identify problems or hazards; standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required.
  • Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter keyboard, or calculator and to operate standard office equipment.
  • Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information.
  • Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials/tools and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
